The Club

A members’ club of quiet standards.

The Civil Service Shooting Club is a members’ club based in Rosyth, Fife. We shoot at three ranges, Blairadam, Craigluscar and Maitland Street in Dunfermline, twice a month at each, with regular clay pigeon shoots at Craigluscar besides.

Training in the relevant discipline is given at each of the three facilities, and newcomers are made welcome.

Frankie Calder shoots for Scotland at Bisley

At this year’s NSRA Bisley meeting, club member Frankie Calder was selected to represent Scotland in the annual Inter-Region match. In tricky conditions she shot 572 ex 600.

She then shot the weekend aggregate, posting 1157 ex 1200 to win Class A and earn promotion to Class X, the top tier. She was also 2nd in the 100 yds aggregate with 193 ex 200.

Chris Cairns helps Great Britain to a first world title

Club member Dr Chris Cairns, an NHS Forth Valley consultant in Critical Care, helped Great Britain win the FTR Rifle Shooting World Championship for the first time in August, after a closely fought competition decided in the final round.

An FTR shooter lying prone behind a scoped target rifle on the range at Bisley, wearing ear defenders and a Scotland cap

Chris first took up long-range target shooting at school, returning to the sport after the Covid-19 pandemic. Competing through local clubs in Scotland, he enjoyed early success and earned a place at the GB team trials in 2024.

With team training at the National Shooting Centre in Bisley, Surrey, Chris regularly travelled the length of the UK while balancing a demanding role in Critical Care at Forth Valley Royal Hospital.

“Trying to hit a five-inch bullseye from 800, 900 and 1,000 yards isn’t easy, especially with a variable crosswind. Balancing training with my role in Critical Care has required effective time management, and understanding colleagues and family.”

The championship was tense, with GB leading Pakistan by a single point going into the final round. When victory was confirmed, Chris described a mix of relief and immense pride after two years of dedication and much of his annual leave.

“GB has never won this event before, so we had blazed the trail. It was an incredible feeling and a huge achievement for the whole team.”

Chris plans to keep competing and to help develop the next generation. As captain of the Scottish team he remains involved in Home Nations events and mentors younger athletes, including members of the GB Under-25 squad. Keeping it in the family, his son Will was part of the U25 GB team that also won at the world championships.
